River City Short Film Festival Competition and Entry Guidelines

The minimum of Rules & Regulations apply to this Festival.

1) Keep your film under the 7 minute maximum (including credits) - a TV advertisement manages to tell a story in around 60 seconds - the Cannes Festival winners in the short film category average 4 minutes - a good short film shows an ability to tell a story concisely, without losing the essence of the original idea - so keep it short

2) Made in New Zealand - sorry, to overseas short film makers - in its inaugural year, this Competition is open only to films made in NZ - watch this space in 2003!

3) New Talent - films completed prior to 2002 for other festivals may be entered - but consider the options - either entering a film that has been proved to be a success or a flop, or showing what has been learned from past experience and revealing a depth of talent with a brand new production - your choice of course.

4) Medium - feel free to make your film in any medium - submit your entry on a VHS copy - label the cassette with the film title & running time - you will be notified if you are a semi-finalist & we will arrange a courier pick up & return, of either your Original Master Copy or preferably an SP Beta copy - River City Film Festival will take care of all transfers of this material for final judging & classification - couldn’t be easier.

5) Copyrights - check with the Recording Company or the Artist for permission to use Music - get it in writing - there will not necessarily be a fee for use - Phonographic Performances (NZ) Ltd, Auckland do ‘clear’ sound recordings for a fee - better to DIY or change the music - even original compositions & performances by friends should have written permission for use - ask all actors who appear in your film to sign a ‘release’ - just a short note will do - “I agree to allow my image to be used in this film called (The name of your film) the film to be exhibited to the public at the River City Film Festival & other future festivals.”

6) Classification - the 24 semi-finalists will have their films shown to the public - the Festival will arrange for Classification & Labelling.

7) Entry Fee - $30 non-refundable - this covers the administration costs of processing your film through judging, classification, programming etc.

8) Awards & Prizes - Awards will be made in the categories of Best Film, Director, Script, Cinematographer, Editor, Actor and Actress - Prizes are yet to be announced.
Best Film will be submitted for entry into the Cannes International Film Festival.

9) Finalists - 12 finalists and 12 ‘best of the rest’ will be selected for continuous filming at the Festival - the 12 finalists receive a ticket for the Presentation Dinner along with category winners who may be connected with films other than the top 12.

10) Judge - the Judge is to be a high profile personality in the film industry - name to be revealed at a later date - the Judge’s decision is final & no correspondence will be entered into.
